Preston’s Great Architectural Bake Off had a touch of the force thanks to a special judge from a galaxy far, far away.

Pint-sized Star Wars actor Kenny Baker, from Preston and known around the world for his portrayal as lovable droid R2-D2, was drafted in to judge the elaborate cake structures as he is the most famous ‘Baker’ in Lancashire.

And some of the cake designs could have been mistaken as being from a galaxy far, far away at the event held by the Frank Whittle Partnership in Preston on Friday with the eventual winner being Kate Simmons with her iced model of the Lytham windmill.

But after deciding on a winner the man who plays the famous droid couldn’t stick around as he promptly left to catch a flight to carry on work on the newest Stars Wars movie, The Force Awakens.

John Bridge, chairman of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and organiser of the bake off, said the event “was fantastic and had a brilliant turnout of over 100 people”.

Other designs in the bake off included a gingerbread man theatre, the birds nest stadium and stonehenge at the event put on to raise awareness of architecture and architects. The event, which ran from 11am until 4pm, also included a live drawing session.
