Parents at a shut-down nursery school are demanding to know what has happened to the fees they paid upfront.
Willows Nursery school in Sharoe Green Lane, Fulwood, Preston, was closed by Ofsted on July 5 after concerns about child safety, and later vandals caused £10,000 damage to the property.
Now financial matters are being questioned by families who have been forced to send their children elsewhere and are struggling to contact those in charge.
Mark Ross took his 16-month-old son Ellis to the nursery, and paid £106 for two future sessions the day before it closed.
He said: “It’s not really about the money, it’s the principle of it all.
“We paid £106, but I know of other parents who paid more than £400 in cash the day before.
“There were 87 children registered there, so there could be a lot of money outstanding and receipts were never issued.
“We have been left with no means of contacting those in charge and we’ve really struggled to get Ellis in anywhere because they’re all full.”
Co-owner Martin Topp said the money had been paid to his ex-wife Susan Topp, who has been registered as the sole trader since January 2012.
He said: “I am aware of a number of parents who have paid funds to the private account of Susan Topp since closure.
“Unfortunately I have not been able to assist with their enquires due to the courts having her address as private.
“I have this morning advised them to send mail to her solicitors.”
The Evening Post tracked down Mrs Topp to a small bungalow in Gregson Lane, near Hoghton. but she refused to speak on the matter.
She told a reporter: “I’m not interested, go away”, before slamming the front door shut.
Ofsted’s suspension in July was “to allow time to investigate our belief that a child may be exposed to a risk of harm, and for any necessary steps to be taken to eliminate or reduce the risk of harm”.
It was due for full reopening on August 16, before the vandalism occurred.
Mr Topp said that Willows Nursery has now ceased trading permanently, but there are negotiations to open a new business on the premises.
