Prison warder guilty of sex assault

A prison officer's career was today in tatters after he was convicted of sexually assaulting a female colleague.

Trevor Wright, 47, groped a junior prison officer while they were both on duty at Preston Prison.

Wright, of Heron Close, Blackburn, denied the charges and claimed the accusations had been fabricated by others jealous of him because he had a holiday home in Florida and a successful wife, but a jury convicted Wright of sexual assault by a majority 10-2 verdict at Preston Crown Court yesterday after six hours of deliberations.

Prison bosses today confirmed that Wright, who worked in the operations department at the prison on Ribbleton Lane, had been sacked.

He was acquitted of another charge of sexual assault against the same women while seven other allegations of a sexual nature against three other employees will lie on his file after the jury failed to reach a verdict.

He will be sentenced in January.
