Preston to get a big wheel for Christmas

Preston is getting a big wheel for Christmas.

The 115-ft high structure will sit on the Lancashire city's Flagmarket as part of a programme of events aimed at attracting thousands of shoppers into the city centre.

It will go alongside the ice rink, a festive Farmer's Market and the traditional Christmas lights switch-on.

Joint chief executive Nicholas Watson, of event organiser the Preston Chamber of Trade, said they would "give the city the best Christmas it has had in years".

He said: "It will give people an amazing view over the city and add to the programme of events which will see so many different things happening this year.

"Preston has never seen the like of this before, and together with the ice rink it fulfils our ambition to give the public a reason to shop in the city centre.

"We are hoping that not only people from Preston will come this Christmas, but from across Lancashire and the North West."

The wheel, which was a huge success in Liverpool last year, will sit on the Flagmarket facing down Friargate and is made up of pods able to hold six people.

It will open on November 16, eight days before the opening night of the ice rink, which will be on Harris Street, between the museum and law courts.

People will be able to buy a joint 7 ticket to have a go on both events or buy separate tickets for the rink and the wheel.
