Power problems spoil Oasis' opening night

Supergroup Oasis' plans of a big homecoming to Manchester were ruined by a faulty generator on Thursday night.

They were forced off the stage in front of around 70,000 fans at Heaton Park during their opening song, Rock 'N' Roll Star, due to sound problems just after 9pm.

The Burnage-born Gallagher brothers and co returned to the stage about 10 minutes later and began to play Lyla - but that song was also cut short due to more technical difficulties.

A message appeared on the stage screens saying generator failure was causing the issues, though the crowd expressed their disapproval with the situation.

Witnesses at the event said smoke could be seen coming from the equipment.

The Manchester band finally reappeared on stage at just before 9.50pm.

Liam Gallagher apologised to the crowd and promised them a refund, adding it was now "a free gig".

There was an 11pm curfew on the concert though Noel Gallagher said the band would play until they were thrown out.

Around 210,000 fans were expected to pour into Heaton Park for three Oasis concerts, the others being on Saturday and Sunday.

There were problems before the opening-night gig when support group The Enemy were forced to pull out after frontman Tom Clarke was taken ill.

Reverend and The Makers took their place. Twisted Wheel and Kasabian were the other support bands.
