Post office robber who went on run to Spain given seven years

A man who robbed a Lancashire post office and later fled to Spain has been jailed for seven years and three months.

Ian Jones, 24, of Missouri Road, Merseyside, was one of a gang who threatened security guards making a cash delivery to Walmer Bridge post office on Liverpool Old Road on February 17, 2006.

The guards were threatened with knives and a hammer before Jones and two accomplices made off in two stolen vehicles which were later abandoned and set on fire.

Jones was arrested in March this year under a European arrest warrant and returned from Madrid to Lancashire.

He pleaded guilty to robbery at Preston Crown Court on October 16 and was jailed by a judge at Manchester Crown Court on Wednesday. Det Sgt Jon Cass from Leyland CID Police said: "This was a lengthy and complex investigation and is another success against organised criminals who think they can travel into Lancashire to commit serious crimes and get away with them. "

He added: "This case is an example of everything that is good about the way the police and public work together."

The breakthrough came when a man contacted BBC's Crimewatch programme about seeing Jones in Spain.

Jones's accomplices, Ashley Cowell and Wayne McNicholl were sentenced in September 2006 to seven years and five years.
