Police are appealing for witnesses to a ‘serious’ M55 collision which closed part of the motorway.

Officers were called around 4pm yesterday following reports a Nissan Micra had veered off the carriageway.

It is believed the car was in the third lane travelling eastbound when it left the motorway, moving down an embankment and stopping in a field.

The driver of the car, a 30-year-old man from Blackpool, suffered multiple fractures to his legs and arms and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.

The motorway was closed eastbound between junction 1 and junction 3 for four hours while accident investigators attended the scene.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the crash.

Sgt Malcolm Bell, of Lancashire Police, said: “This was a serious road traffic collision which left a man with severe injuries.

“We would ask anyone with information to contact police immediately.”

People can contact police on 101 quoting log reference 0805 of December 24.
