Preston North End handed Leeds United a drubbing in this War of the Roses Championship Match.
What might once have been a frightening Halloween fixture was a walkover for PNE, who scored two goals in the first half, with Danny Dichio finding the back of the Leeds net at 19 minutes with Danny Pugh adding a second after 22 minutes.
Shortly after the break, Dave Nugent hit a third, but it seemed Leeds might have an opportunity for a comeback ten minutes from the end, as former Preston player, David Healy scored for the Peacocks.
But just four minutes later, Lewis Neal sealed the deal for Preston, putting the final nail in the coffin for the visitors.
North End boss Paul Simpson said: “Everyone will talk about Danny Dichio, Simon Whaley or Dave Nugent because it is a four-goal win, but the way we defended was superb.
“For me, people like Liam Chilvers and Sean St Ledger were different class. I felt they were superb.”
The win kept PNE in second spot and brought them some measure of revenge for the play-off defeat at the hands of Leeds in May.
Simpson confessed he had not detected any extra edge in the squad because of the nature of the fixture and the fact that three former Prestonplayers were in the visitors’ line-up.
He said: “There was obviously a bit of history there, but I think the players just get on with it – for them it’s just the next game.
“Leeds have so much history that when you come up against a team like that you
just want to beat them.”
