Transport in Preston was disrupted on Wednesday afternoon after a person was hit by a train near Lytham.
British Transport Police were called at about 12.15pm, after reports that somebody had been hit by a train between Lytham and Ansdell and Fairhaven stations.
Officers attended alongside police and paramedics, and discovered a person had been struck and killed by a train.
A British Transport Police spokesman said: “We are in the process of determining how they came to be on the tracks and identifying the deceased.
“Once we have done that we will be in a position to inform the family and determine what investigation needs to take place.
“The incident is currently being treated as unexplained.”
Buses were replacing trains between Preston and Blackpool South via St Annes-on-Sea.
