The southbound carriageway of the M61 motorway between Chorley and Horwich was closed overnight after a fatal accident involving a car and a pedestrian.
Traffic had to be diverted off the motorway at junction eight near Botany Bay and re-routed along the A6, rejoining at junction six near to Bolton Wanderers’ Reebok Stadium.
The accident happened just after the Bolton West services and police closed the motorway for around seven hours to carry out a detailed investigation. The closure was lifted around 8am on Sunday.
Meanwhile the M55 between Blackpool and Kirkham was closed in both directions early on Sunday for emergency electrical repairs.
