Parrot rescued from thugs

Shaken but not ruffled – this is the parrot saved after youths pelted it with stones.

The bedraggled blue-faced parrot was perched on a tree near to the Anderton Arms, in Longsands Lane, Fulwood, on Christmas Day, as a group of teenagers threw stones at it.

Worried residents called police who contacted Leyland animal rescuer Barn Owl Bill – real name Bill Higham.

After getting the call at around noon, he managed to capture the bird after a 45 minute chase.

It is now recovering at Mr Higham's home in Southbrook Road, Leyland.

He said: "We had just got everything in the cooker for Christmas dinner when the police in Preston phoned up.

"When we got there, there were a couple of lads who had not been throwing stones.

"But, being a parrot, it was on the thinnest branch it could find.

"The poor thing is bald everywhere, it has got a few under feathers on its breast and a few on its wings but that is it.

"It had a really bad infection on its leg so we have given it some antibiotics and some painkiillers.

"It doesn't have a tag so we have no idea who it belongs to.

"We are going to advertise it on the website but it has been badly neglected."

The lack of a tag also means there is no clue as to the age of the bird, which has been named Treacle by its temporary owners.

Mr Higham also slammed the youths seen hurling stones at the terrified animal.

He added: "They are morons and that is putting it politely."

A spokesman for Lancashire police said a resident had called at just before noon to say the parrot was perched in a conifer and youths were trying to throw stones at it.
