Olympic athletes are encouraging Ribble Valley residents to dive in with a new swimming scheme.

Silver medallist swimmer Samantha Murray and bronze medal-winning kayar Jon Schofield launched the Swimfit programme at the Ribblesdale Pool in Clitheroe, Samantha’s home town.

Participants in the scheme can discuss their individual goals with instructors, before starting a personal pool workout programme based on different strokes and following swimming tips.

Colin Winterbottom, Ribble Valley Council’s leisure and sports development manager, said: “A gentle swim can burn over 200 calories in half an hour and a fast front crawl can burn as many calories as an eight-mile run.”

Sessions take place from 8.45pm to 9.30pm on Tuesdays and 8pm to 9pm on Wednesdays. Sessions cost £3.60. Further details are available from Ribblesdale Pool on 01200 424825.
