Olympian Sam up for award

Olympic medalist, Samantha Murray.

Olympic medalist, Samantha Murray.

Silver Olympic medalist and Lancashire’s golden girl, Samantha Murray has been nominated for a national award.

Samantha, from Clitheroe, found out via her Twitter feed on Tuesday that she had been nominated for the William Hill Sports Women of The Year award and couldn’t be happier.

Speaking from her University home in Bath the 23-year-old said; “I’m really, really pleased.

“It is a huge honour to be nominated alongside this group of women.

“It’s funny because many of the girls who I am up against are gold medallist and I only won silver.”

Samantha is now urging the people of Lancashire to get behind her and cast their votes.

She said; “I probably won’t win, Jessica Ennis will more than likely walk it but it would be nice for my fellow Lancastrians to vote for me.

“Even if I don’t win just being nominated is brilliant coverage for the sport.”

Samantha won her silver medal in the Modern Pentathlete at this year’s Summer Olympics, London 2012.

She enjoyed a homecoming parade through Clitheroe earlier this year before returning to her undergraduate studies of Politics and French at the University of Bath.
