Police have found and arrested a runaway driver after pursuing a car that failed to stop.

James Morrison, 19, was arrested at 6.10pm last night after driving a car “recklessly and dangerously” with no insurance and with his girlfriend and a three-year-old child as passengers.

The chase was in the Mereside area of Blackpool and involved six police vehicles before Mr Morrison abandoned his car, girlfriend and the child in Toby Carvery’s car park on Preston New Road before fleeing on foot, according to police.

Claire Cooper, the force incident manager who led the pursuit, said: “Mr Morrison was signalled to stop by a traffic officer because it was a car that was recognised as having no insurance,” she said. “He didn’t stop and we then began to pursue his car with half a dozen vehicles. He was driving very recklessly and dangerously and although it wasn’t bad enough for me to call off the pursuit it was well below the standard anyone should be driving. We also didn’t realise at the beginning of the pursuit that there was a child in the back due to the tinted windows but that obviously makes his actions even more reckless and they could have had very serious consequences. We set up several stinger sites in an attempt to stop Mr Morrison but unfortunately he pulled into Toby Carvery and fled on foot before our dog patrols could get on the scene and track him down.”

The pursuit began at 10.47am and the car was left in the car park at around 11.45am and after interviewing Mr Morrison’s girlfriend, police followed various leads and within a matter of hours arrested him.
