Numbers do not add up for bingo

Bingo clubs in Lancashire have hit out at the increase in tax, announced in the Budget.

The government's decision to increase the rate of bingo duty from 15% to 22%, has made it Britain's most heavily taxed form of gaming.

Online bingo, betting shops and football pools are all taxed at a rate of 15%.

Now the Rank Group – which operates Mecca Bingo – wrote to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, branding the increase "damaging and unwarranted".

Craig Millar, Mecca Bingo's area manager for Lancashire and Merseyside, said: "The Budget statement was a major blow for our clubs and for the rest of the industry.

"We do not understand why the government continues to discriminate against the nation's bingo clubs, which play an important role in bringing people together in the communities which they serve."
