Playground fire tackled by crew

FIRE crews were called to a city park after rubber matting in a playground was set on fire.

One engine from Preston fire station attended at Ribbleton Park at about 10.30pm on Monday, and firefighters used a hose reel to extinguish the blaze.

Nobody was injured.

Key projects to be identified

WYRE Council’s cabinet is due to consider community projects worth £60,000.

The Shaping Your Neighbourhood scheme was launched to allow communities to be directly involved in improving their neighbourhoods. Over £400,000 has already been allocated to several areas.

Farm market comes to town

CUERDEN Valley Farmers’ Market is taking place on Sunday from 10am to 2pm.

Lots of fresh local food and crafts will be available at the site in and around the Barn, Berkeley Drive, Bamber Bridge.

There will be free parking and a tea shop. Donations go to Cuerden Valley Park Trust.

THE Leeds – Morecambe Community Rail Partnership and Morecambe Town Council want to help form a “Friends of Morecambe Station” group.

TWENTY-two BAE Systems Business Administration apprentices, based at Warton and Samlesbury, all achieved distinctions in level 3 Project Management at Runshaw Business Centre, Leyland.

Charity appeals for more help

ST CATHERINE’S Hospice have appealed for people to help them raise funds. The Lostock Hall based charity are fundraising in Longton on Friday, July, 25 and they tweeted for help. They said via @StCatherinesPre: “Can you help with a bucket collection at Booths in Longton this Friday?” Call Emma on: 01772 629171 if you can help between 10am and 1pm and 1pm and 4pm.

Deaf rugby day

ENGLAND Deaf Rugby Union will host a Family Deaf Rugby Day for deaf men and women aged six and upwards at Preston Grasshoppers RFU Club in Fulwood, on August 2. A spokesman said: “In due course it is hoped that PGRFU will become a regional Centre of Excellence for Deaf Rugby.”

Summer bash

THE Mayor of South Ribble Graham Walton will host a summer concert at the Civic Centre, Leyland, tonight.

The Clayton-le-Woods Singers will perform at the charity bash, starting at 7pm.

Bottoms up at beer festival

A BEER festival will be held at Charnock Richard Football Club, near Chorley, this weekend.

There will be real ale, ciders and craft lagers, as well as live entertainment.

It runs from Friday to Sunday at the Charter Lane club and doors open at 1pm.

HOGHTON Tower is holding its first “unusual plant fair” from 11am to 4pm on Sunday, August 24.

There will be a diverse range of plants on offer and expert advice.

Make-up thief sent to prison

A PROLIFIC shoplifter has been jailed for 16 weeks after stealing makeup from Superdrug to sell to a friend.

Willliam Brown, 37, of Yew Tree Avenue, Grange, pleaded guilty at Preston Magistrates Court and asked for two other thefts to be taking into consideration

Blood session

BLOOD donor sessions will be held at Preston College, St Vincent’s Road, Fulwood from 1.45pm - 3.45pm and 5pm to 7.30pm today.
