Preston and South Ribble’s new mayors have been sworn in to take the chains of office.

Couns Albert Richardson and David Suthers were installed as first citizens of the areas they represent at special council meetings.

And for Coun Richardson, who represents St Matthew’s ward, it’s the second time he has been mayor.

He said: “I feel extremely privileged.

“It is a very important time for Preston as a city, it has great potential and great history to build upon.

“I am particularly looking forward to meeting the people, businesses, voluntary and charitable organisations, schools and faith groups that make this position so rewarding and enjoyable.”

Coun Richardson was born in Kendal, Cumbria, and served in the Armed Forces from 1953-56.

He was elected to Preston Council in 1978 to represent Deepdale, which is now known as St Matthew’s. He was previously mayor of Preston for the year 1990-1991.

Assisting him in his role will be his two mayoresses - Honorary Alderman Rose Kinsella who is a former mayor of Preston and Sheila Crook.

He will be raising money for Vine House in Ribbleton and Central Lancashire Alzheimer’s Society.

Coun David Suthers is the 37th mayor of South Ribble.

He ran Junction Garage in Longton with his wife Madge, before retiring in 1999.

He became a councillor for Little Hoole & Much Hoole Ward in the same year and he also serves on the board of New Progress Housing, has been a governor at Little Hoole Primary School for 18 years, and is a past president of South Ribble Rotary Club.

He said: “The last 12 months as deputy mayor and mayoress has provided us with good training and we are very much looking forward to the year ahead. It is a great honour to be carrying out this civic duty and we hope to meet a lot of interesting people and raise money for our chosen charities.”

He will raise money for St Catherine’s Hospice, Derian House, and Life Education Centres for Lancashire.
