The residents of Hesketh Bank, Tarleton and Banks are setting up a Univerity of the Third Age (U3A).

The group, offering activities for older people, is to be known as the Becconsall U3A and will hold regular meetings on Thursday mornings at the Village Community Centre in Station Road, Hesketh Bank.

Chairman Terry Baldwin said: “The U3A movement has provided a wonderful lifeline for people who are retired or semi-retired to pursue a host of educational, recreational and leisure activities with like minded folk and it also offers the companionship that everyone needs, but some people may lose after retirement, redundancy, bereavement or divorce.”

Secretary, Janet Yates added: “We already have a range of activities lined up as chosen by the people who attended the launch meeting. These include, walking, cycling, table tennis, badminton, crafts, theatre trips and choral singing.”

An inagural meeting takes place at 2pm at All Saints Church Hall, Hesketh Bank on Wednesday, July 9.
