A narrowboat was stuck for several hours after lock gates failed on the Leeds Liverpool Canal in Whittle-le-Woods, near Chorley.

The broken gates let water out of the lock very quickly, causing the back of the boat to crash down and get stuck on the concrete.

The drama unfolded at around 11am on Friday on a stretch of the canal near to Dark Lane, leading to a lengthy rescue operation.

The man and woman who own the boat and their two dogs were uninjured. At the time the dogs and the woman were off the boat.

The Canal and River Trust were called and workers from Wheelton Boat Yard and Canal Boat Cruises from Riley Green were also on hand to help.

Dawn Markland from Wheelton Boat Yard said: “We allowed water in slowly so the boat could refloat itself.”

There was no internal damage to the boat and the owners are now waiting to find out if there was any engine damage.
