The cause of a mystery blast which blew a manhole cover into the air was being investigated today.
The incident happened this afternoon in Lancaster Road, Preston.
Two fire crews from Preston attended amid fears of a gas blast.
Officers said it was lucky no-one was hurt in the incident.
The area was sealed off as firefighters and police carried out an investigation.
Preston fire station manager Neil Taylor said officers established that gas and electricity supplies were beneath the manhole.
An initial check revealed no gas leak.
Mr Taylor said: “It was very fortunate that nobody was hurt. There was certainly an explosion of some sort. A gas leak was suspected but there is no evidence of that so far.
“United Utilities are at the scene.”
