My rape ordeal...

A teenager who was raped by her uncle has waived her right to anonymity six years after the attack. Crime Reporter STEF HALL meets her.

Kirsty Maddox hugs her pink fleece dressing gown around her shoulders as if protecting herself from an invisible chill as she remembers the night that changed her life.

We are sitting in the front room of her parents' home in Fox Lane, Leyland, surrounded by her three-year-old son's toys.

It appears the typical happy family setting – but it is in this same house that Kirsty's uncle Peter Maddox launched a depraved attack on her in 2004.

She had just turned 13 and was an outgoing child with dreams of becoming a nurse.

Peter Maddox was a respected member of the family who had spent 20 years in the Royal Marines, reaching the rank of sergeant and serving in Northern Ireland, the Falklands and Bosnia.

He was forced to leave his post after he was convicted of sexually assaulting a nine-year-old girl in 2001 and jailed for nine months. It is claimed he later told trusting relatives the conviction had been overturned.

But it was not long before he struck again.

The twice-married, registered sex offender sneaked into a bedroom in Kirsty's family home during a party and attacked the terrified youngster while oblivious revellers partied downstairs.

Recalling the terrible event she says: "I had fallen asleep in my brother's room because someone else was staying in my room. I woke to find him on top of me. He held my wrists down and said: 'Come on Kirsty it's Uncle Peter'."

Maddox was disturbed by Kirsty's younger brother Danny, then 11, who ran to get his parents. The rapist fled the house but was arrested a short distance away.
