MY BIGGEST BARGAIN
“One of my biggest bargains is this pink coat which I found in the sale at Zara.
“Hip-length, double-breasted and in a sweetly soft candy-floss hue, the winter wrapper stood out a mile on the clothes rack beside all its navy, burgundy and hunter green relatives.
“I was in Zara in Oxford Street, London and the pink glory was hanging on a rail.
“There was no price tag attached, so I took it to the tills.
“‘It’s been reduced to £30’ the cashier told me. I felt like jumping into the air, and clicking my heels together in celebration.
“I had been looking for the perfect pink coat for months and here was one in my hand.
“When I looked on the Zara website, I found that the coat had originally been £79.99.
“It was a bargain indeed.
“But, if I were to talk about the ultimate bargain that left me screaming with joy, it would have to be the day I found the most exquisitely perfect pair of trainers on sale.
“A hybrid mix of chunky soles and sleek minimalism and cast in a navy-black jacquard fabric, these Nikes were dreamy.
“It was love at first sight. I fell harder for these trainers than I had fallen for any of my other shoes which are mostly black boots with buckles and chunky heels.
“My boyfriend and I were passing the Nike shop and I happened to glance inside. There sitting on a shelf were my exquisite jacquard Nike trainers.
“Peering inside to find the label, I saw one of the most wondrous things ever – they were on sale.
“Reduced from £81.99 to £40.99, they were a steal.
“When I asked the sales assistant for the other shoe, I heard him say a beautiful thing: ‘We only have them in a size 4.5.’
“‘Perfect! That’s my size.’ I smiled happily at him.
“This day honestly can’t get any better,” I thought. But little did I know, it could, and it did.
“‘Did you know we’re also offering 20 per cent discount?’ the cashier asked me.
“I gaped at him wide-eyed. An extra 20 per cent off on top of half price?
“It would be borderline rude to even think about refusing.
“A few clicks, a tap and the swipe of a debit card later, the beautiful trainers were mine for the bargain price of £33.
MY ULTIMATE SPLURGE
“Recently, I have become a bit of a watch addict. A simple accessory that, simultaneously has the remarkable ability to dress up an outfit and tell the time.
“My personal favourite is the boyfriend watch – an oversized design with a large, round face and a chunky chain-link strap.
“Last September, I found the most lovely one of all. It was a Marc by Marc Jacobs watch in an enchanting rose gold with an oversized face in a delicate cream.
“Since spring 2011, rose gold has been making a luxurious comeback with major approval from designers like Michael Kors.
“Created by mixing copper with gold, it has the ability to warm up any complexion and add a fancy touch to what may otherwise be a plain outfit.
“And being the shopping addict that I am, I could not resist.
“So, I began hinting to my boyfriend that I wanted the Marc Jacobs watch.
“For £209, it was a splurge that my parents would not be likely to indulge me in, especially as I had been asking for an Apple Macbook laptop.
“Naturally, the boyfriend was the next bet.
“Luckily for me, he agreed - albeit with a handful of sighs, some grumbles and eye-rolling – and I got the beautiful watch for my 20th.
“At £209, it’s one of the most expensive pieces of jewellery I own, but certainly one of most worn.
“If we’re referring to the cost-per-wear equation, the watch has definitely been an investment worth making – thanks to my other half.
“Now I have my eye on the silver version of my Marc by Marc Jacobs watch.
“There’s no such thing as having too many watches!”
