Music festival idea takes off

Organiser: Nigel Stewart

Organiser: Nigel Stewart

A weekend of live performances is being planned to boost Penwortham’s economy.

Called Penwortham Live!, the festival will take place on April 12 and 13, across venues in the Liverpool Road area.

It comes on the back of last year’s successful live music festival Leyland Live! which saw 1,200 tickets sold.

Organiser Nigel Stewart said: “I’m doing this as a volunteer to try and bring three communities together - the people of Penwortham, the artists, and the venues.

“Penwortham is a great place to live and there is already a lot of things going on, but we need more.

“We also need to be supportive of local businesses because times are hard and it’s been a difficult period for them.”

Penwortham Live! is not limited to music performances, with drama groups, magicians and comedians lined up to perform along with rock bands, choirs and jazz acts.

There will also be demonstrations by jewellery shops and food outlets.

Performances will be held in up to 15 restaurants, pubs, cafés, shops and other businesses stretching from Priory Lane to the Sir Tom Finney Pub in Central Drive.

Wristbands will cost £5 each and will give access to all venues for both days. Venues will get to keep the money to cover their costs.

Each venue will host four acts each night, with 7pm, 8pm, 9pm and 10pm slots.

Each performance will last for 45 minutes with a 15 minute slot in between so people can move venue if they want.

Mr Stewart added: “There’s going to be in the region of 120 performances available for £5, and that’s a brilliant thing.

“In Leyland the business owners told me they couldn’t keep up with demand, and everyone had a blast.
