Multiple problems hit region’s rail services

Commuters using trains in and out of Lancashire are experiencing a series of delays and cancellations tonight.

Overhead wire problems on lines in Liverpool, a vehicle striking a bridge between Chester and Flint, and a fatality on the tracks in Lockerbie, Scotland, are having knock-on effects throughout the north.

Wiring problems have been ongoing throughout the day and although now completed, there are residual delays while services recover.

Northern Rail are running limited services between Liverpool Lime Street and Wigan North Western/Manchester Victoria, also affecting Warrington Bank Quay and Blackpool North.

A replacement bus service is supplementing services Earlestown and Manchester Victoria.

Virgin services travelling north are also being affected by a fatality, with disruptions expected until at least 9pm.
