MP wants greater scrutiny of the BBC

Call: MP David Morris

Call: MP David Morris

A Tory MP has called for greater scrutiny of the BBC.

David Morris, who represents Morecambe and Lunesdale, spoke in a debate on Parliamentary oversight of the broadcaster at Westminster.

Mr Morris wrote to backbench Conservative MPs in October, saying the Director General’s appointment should be confirmed by the House of Commons via a system designed in consultation with both the BBC and MPs.

He said MPs should have the right to table Parliamentary Questions to the BBC and said the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee should have regular oversight of the actions of the BBC.

He said: “I believe that we, as Members of Parliament, should now force the BBC to become more accountable.

“I wrote a series of Parliamentary Questions about the BBC and took them to the table office, only to learn that we do not have the power to scrutinise this institution.

“We have the right to ask about the property portfolio of the Church of England, through Church Commissioners Questions, but not our national state broadcaster.

“This must change.”
