An MP paid a visit to a community club bringing sport to the doorstep of young people.
Preston member Mark Hendrick called on Fishwick Rangers, one of two clubs in the city selected as part of a nationwide programme established by national sports charity StreetGames. It aims to engage young people from disadvantaged areas in sport.
The club holds a range of sport activities including football and dodgeball, as well as running a new multi-sport programme, especially for girls. The programme is supported by Sport England to get people developing a sporting habit for life. With £3.38m of National Lottery funding committed to the programme, Fishwick Rangers, along with the Red Rose club in Deepdale, are two of 307 Doorstep Sport Clubs that will be established by summer 2014 to transform the sporting and social landscape in hundreds of disadvantaged communities.
“StreetGames is a great initiative offering young people access to different sports available right on their doorstep for a minimal cost,” said Mr Hendrick. “I’ve seen first-hand the fantastic way Doorstep Sport Clubs deliver activities, placing an emphasis on fun and inclusion. I’m sure it will be hugely popular and a real asset to the community.”
