Morecambe captain Mark Hughes says he did not send offensive messages to fans on Twitter and believes his account has been hacked.

The central defender came in for criticism from some supporters for his performance in the 3-2 defeat to Dagenham & Redbridge on Sunday and appeared to retaliate following the match.

But Hughes says he has not used the account for more than a year and is trying to make sure it is deleted.

He said: “I was shocked as anyone to see the comment that was allegedly made by me towards a supporter after the game.

“I did open a Twitter account but I have not used it for more than a year.

“I had some problems with several personal accounts being hacked last year and I can only presume that that has happened here and I am deeply distressed to see my name associated with such comments made to a Morecambe fan.

“I am looking to do all I can now to take my account down for good to avoid anything like this happening again.

“I am proud to be the captain of Morecambe Football Club and would not do anything to harm the relationship the club has with its fans.”
