Modern day family appeal
Latest news
A museum is launching a project to investigate the modern day Preston family.
‘The Chorley Family of Preston’ is the oldest known portrait of a Preston family, dating back to around 1667, and it will feature in the new Discover Preston Gallery, opening at the Harris Museum and Art Gallery this summer.
The portrait features Henry and Ellen Chorley and their six sons and there are many clues about the family within the painting, including visual links to the haberdashery business the family owned and ran on Fishergate, and to their religious beliefs as Presbyterians.
The Harris is now launching a project linked to this remarkable portrait, to investigate the modern day Preston family, household or group.
Lucy Carlton-Walker, assistant learning and access officer at the Harris, said: “We want to discover what ‘family’ means today in our city.
“It could simply mean those you share a close relationship with, they may not be related to you. We want to capture modern Preston in all its glory.”
The Harris team will be out and about to promote the project and get people involved at the Pavilion in Avenham Park, from 11am to 4pm on Tuesday February 14, and in the Citizen Zone bus at Deepdale Shopping Park, between 11am and 4pm on Thursday, February 16.
Families and groups can have their photograph taken, to become part of a rolling display of images within the Discover Preston Gallery.
In March, some of these families and groups will have the chance to take part in making short films for the new gallery.
