When a bright light was spotted soaring through the night sky, it caused a flurry of excitement and baffled calls to the police.
Most people quickly came to the conclusion they were witnessing a rare meteorite.
But 69-year-old Jim Mooney believes there was a little more to it.
Mr Mooney, of Dovedale Avenue, Ingol, Preston, was waiting for the bus shortly before 10pm on Saturday, when he spotted the flying light.
He said: “I was at the bus stop opposite Greyfriars (Friargate), and while I was looking towards Greyfriars, this lady said ‘Whatever is that?’
“To me, when I see a meteorite up in the sky on television, they have a trail and they keep going along.
“But this thing came into view, and it did not appear to have a trail behind it.
“It seemed to stall, and after it did that, it was as if somebody switched an engine on, and it flared the back.”
Mr Mooney, a retired granddad-of-one, said it was not the first time he had seen something which made him question whether ‘we are not alone’.
He said: “It was about nine or 10 years ago, I had been going down Tanterton Hall Road, and there was this green bowl which was running parallel to Tanterton Hall Road.
“Suddenly, it crossed the road and disappeared at the speed of light. I think it was a UFO, I honestly do.”
Mr Mooney said the latest sighting had confirmed his beliefs about extraterrestrial life. He said: “People think we are the only ones in this system. If they think that, I think there is something wrong with them.”
