One of Preston’s most prolific shoplifters has finally been jailed.
Derren Hanmer has been caught 10 times this year alone.
The 42-year-old, who lives with his brother in Elizabeth Street, Preston, is known to officers for stealing large quantities of meat including gammon and steak.
But his shop theft spree was put to an end on Wednesday when Preston Magistrates Court sentenced him to 26 weeks in prison for a string of offences he admitted to the bench.
Earlier this year, in February, he was given a six week sentence suspended for 12 months when he admitted six thefts and had seven others taken into consideration.
This time, the bench activated the suspended sentence alongside his new punishment.
Preston police said Hanmer has been a thorn in their side, with a penchant for stealing chilled goods.
He has struck in several shops including Tesco, the Student’s Union shop on Fylde Road, and the nearby Night Owl store
PCSO Stephen Connolly, of Preston Police, said: “He steals quite big quantities of food - he took £60 of steak from Tesco.
“He will spend his 43rd birthday behind bars.”
