The registration plate from the mayor’s car has failed to attract a single bid after Preston Council tried to sell it on eBay.
The auction ended yesterday, but the city’s cabinet member for resources said he still intended to sell it to pay for the mayor’s car.
Coun Martyn Rawlinson said: “We still intend to sell it, but it’s not on eBay any more so we will have to decide how we are going to do it.
“There are other ways of selling it, but that was the most public way and we thought it might get a result.”
He said the council had bought the mayor’s Jaguar for £13,000, and said: “We would still like to pay for the mayor’s car, without the tax- payer forking out. The mayoralty is a luxury right now, as historical and wonderful as it is - when people are losing their jobs it’s a luxury.”
He said the plate may now have to be sold for less than the initial reserve of £22,000, but said: “We’re not going to sell it for a song. We are definitely hoping it will still go for the price of the car.”
