Man tried to flee police patrol car on his bicycle

A man on a bicycle tried to escape police pursuing him in a patrol car during a chase at Kirkham.

Neil Shane peddled furiously along Freckleton Road and refused to stop, despite police putting on their car's blue lights and sirens.

Shane struggled violently when stopped and scratched a policewoman, inflicting three deep bleeding scratches on her arm.

Shane, unemployed, 46, of Shaftsbury Avenue, North Shore, Blackpool, admitted assaulting PC Sarah Neary and behaving in a threatening manner.

He was given a 12-month conditional discharge by Blackpool's magistrates.

Pam Smith, prosecuting, said on August 22 at 3pm PC Neary and a colleague were on mobile patrol on Freckleton Road when Shane passed them on the opposite side of the road, riding a blue and white bicycle.

He swore repeatedly and stuck both middle fingers up at the officers.

Mrs Smith said: "PC Neary illuminated her vehicle's blue lights and turned the car round to follow him. As she came alongside, she shouted at him to stop but he refused.

"She sounded the vehicle's siren and beeped the horn, but Shane lowered his body and went faster in an apparent bid to evade her."

When he was stopped, Shane said: "What are you doing travelling on this road.

"Why don't you go to the police station for a coffee."

As PC Neary attempted to give him an on-the-spot fine he tried to cycle off.

In the melee which followed, Shane tried to kick both officers and repeatedly scratched PC Neary's arm with his nails.

At the police station, he shouted: "I'm going to pray to God harder that you all die."

Shane, who said he was getting help for mental health problems, told magistrates: "I want to apologise again for my bad behaviour before and after I was arrested."
