Man injured in industrial accident

A worker suffered head injuries in an accident at an industrial estate.

Health and safety bosses launched an investigation following the incident at the Claughton Industrial Estate, near Garstang, shortly before midday on Tuesday.

The man, who was working at manufacturing firm Wood and Stirling, was injured during a "lifting operation", a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) spokesman said.

Eyewitness Mark O'Shea, sales manager at nearby Garstang Timber, said around 10 staff were evacuated from the warehouse.

He said: "The main doors are right opposite our yard.

"The ambulance and the fast response had gone in, then the ambulance backed up to the doors. It must have been quite serious.

"We saw him get stretchered into the ambulance with a neck brace on.

"The air ambulance landed but the land ambulance took him to hospital."

Paul West, clinical manager at the North West Air Ambulance, said paramedics were called to the Brockholes Way estate at 11.38am and arrived at 11.51am.

A rapid response vehicle had already arrived and a land ambulance followed.

He said the man was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital by land ambulance, accompanied by a member of the air ambulance staff.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said the man had suffered "facial injuries" and said: "It has been passed to the Health and Safety Executive."

A spokesman for the HSE said: "A worker suffered head injuries during a lifting operation.

"An inspector has been out and an investigation has been launched."

A member of staff at Wood and Stirling refused to comment.
