Man becomes human statue in capital

A Lancashire man became a human statue by perching on a plinth in London's Trafalgar Square.

Neil Sutcliffe, 50, of Park Lane, Penwortham, perched on top of a plinth, in London's Trafalgar Square, reading gospels to the crowds below for 60 minutes.

Neil, an accountant, was one of 2,400 human exhibits chosen at random to take part in artist Antony Gormley's One and Other exhibition by spending an hour on the empty Fourth Plinth.

Neil, who is also treasurer of the Christadelphian Church, in Blackburn, took to the plinth from 1pm to 2pm yesterday, watched by his brother Russell, wife Olwen and 14-year-old daughter Abbii.

He said: "It was very fun – I survived and it went very well. You could interact with the people – it was not a case that you were so high up you could not see what was happening.

"Some people seemed to appreciate it and I got a round of applause at the end. With the microphone I could be heard right across the square."

Another statue, Rachel Baynton, 28, of St Paul's Road, Lancaster, is also due to take to the plinth on July 25, from 5pm to 6pm.

Rachel, who is a member of the Proto-type Theatre company in Lancaster, is inviting people to send her messages, which she will throw to the crowds written on paper aeroplanes.

She said: "I have had a few requests already – someone wanting to insult Jeremy Clarkson, someone saying we should read more and one for cancer awareness."

Rachel will also print the messages on her blog and hopes people who catch the aeroplanes will log on to discuss the message they find.

But if any end up on the floor she will pick them up afterwards.

She said: "I hope they will pick them up and take them as a souvenir as having taken part in the project.

"I did not have anything I needed to shout, but I thought there are people out there who did."
