Worry lives are at risk on winter roads

Thousands of drivers will be putting their lives at risk this winter, according to the founder of a autobody repair company.

Karl Vella, managing director of the Karl Vella Group which has sites in Preston, Skelmersdale, Southport and Barrow, said icy conditions, coupled with the state of local roads and people getting out of the habit of having their vehicles checked regularly, is a recipe for disaster.

He is now calling on drivers and authorities to both play their parts in ensuring people remain safe on the roads.

He said: “Because of the downturn over the past few years, people are not getting bumps and scrapes checked out even though it may have caused a major fault.

“There has been a noticeable increase in the amount of potholes on our roads, and complaints that gritting has been less than effective. I am concerned that all this is a recipe for disaster.

“The public services need to play their part, by ensuring roads are repaired and are kept as clear as possible.”
