A woman broke down in the witness box as she recounted her desperate struggle to escape a man who dragged her down an alley and sexually assaulted her 14 years ago.
Paul Barbarel, 32, denies being the man who allegedly grabbed the woman from behind, telling her he had a knife, before forcing her to the floor and attacking her as she walked home alone.
Giving evidence from behind screens, the woman, who was a university student at the time of the assault, said she was trying to phone her friend to assure her she was safe when she heard footsteps running up behind her.
She told Preston Crown Court: “He came up behind me and grabbed me in a lock position.
“One arm came round behind my neck and he had his hand over my mouth.
“He was restricting my arms and his other arm was around my midriff.
“I just thought, ‘I need to get him off me’.
“I was struggling.
“My dad always told me if ever anyone attacked me I had to knee them in the groin and that was in my mind but because of the position I was in I couldn’t do that.
“My phone was in my hand all the time.
“All the way through when it was happening I was desperately trying to call my friend.
“I was screaming and shouting for help.”
During the struggle the woman said she kicked out behind at her attacker and bit him repeatedly on his hands.
At one stage she managed to break free of the man but she told the court: “I didn’t get very far.
“He came straight after me and knocked me to the floor...
“I still had my phone in my hand, still trying desperately to phone my friend.
“At that point I’d lost the fight really.
“There was no more I could do.
“I just thought ‘just do what you are going to do to me. There is nothing more I can do.’”
The woman told the court her attacker assaulted her but was interrupted by a man who shouted across the street.
The attacker ran away and the man - who has never been traced - walked the woman home to safety.
Traces of blood were found on the woman’s jacket.
However, due to an administrative error the DNA results were not uploaded to a database until 2011 - 12 years after the attack.
Barbarel, of Chorley Road, Walton-le-Dale, denies the attack and another attack on a prostitute walking alone in the city earlier this year.
