A woman has been told to pay out nearly £3,500 after she was caught illegally whitening teeth at a beauty salon.

Hayley Wilding, 25, of Field House Lane, Pilling, near Preston, failed to attend a hearing at Lancaster Magistrates’ Court.

She was proved guilty in her absence of unlawfully practising dentistry at Vanity Salon in Lancaster.

Wilding was also found guilty of unlawfully carrying on the business of dentistry when the offence was committed at the premises in Ullswater Road, Ridge on June 27 last year.

The prosecution was launched by the General Dental Council (GDC), which is the regulatory body for the dental profession in the UK.

Wilding was fined £900 in relation to the first charge and £450 in relation to the second charge.

Magistrates ordered her to pay a £135 victim surcharge and full court costs to the GDC of £1,862.

Only dentists, dental hygienists and dental therapists can carry out tooth whitening.

This is the second successful prosecution launched by the GDC since a decision by the High Court last May that tooth whitening is the practice of dentistry and should only be undertaken by registered dental professionals.

The Dentists Act 1984 makes it a criminal offence for anyone other than a registered dental professional to carry out dentistry.

A spokesman for the GDC said: “We are committed to protecting the public by bringing cases of illegal practice to court.”

When the Evening Post contacted Vanity Salon, its manager Leanne McClements said Wilding had left the business in November.

She said she had been unaware of the law and that the salon was no longer providing teeth whitening.

The manager said: “She had a certificate to say she had done a tooth whitening course, but according to the GDC you’re not allowed to do it unless you’re registered with them. To be registered with them you have to be a dental technician or a dentist.

“We were totally unaware of this and I was totally unaware she was being prosecuted. In November she randomly came in, collected her stuff and left, then didn’t return any phone calls.

“We are not doing teeth whitening anymore.”
