A Lancaster woman accused of attempting to smuggle cocaine into Britain in her suitcase has been remanded in custody after her first appearance at court.

Dawn Sylla, 54, who is known to be from Lancashire but is of no fixed abode, was arrested by Border Force officers at Edinburgh airport on Monday after a “substantial” amount of the class A drug was discovered concealed in her luggage as she arrived on a flight from Brussels.

She appeared in Edinburgh Sheriff Court charged with the importation of controlled drugs but made no plea or declaration during the hearing, which was heard in private.

Tests will be carried out to measure the weight and purity of the drugs which are understood to be worth a high five-figure sum, according to officials.

A spokesman for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said Sylla was next expected to appear in the dock again on March 12.
