Abida Mahmood was taken to Royal Preston Hospital with wounds to her nose, leg, neck and hands after the Collie American Bulldog cross raced out of an open door to attack her on Crompton Street in Ribbleton.

The 45-year-old, who also lives in Ribbleton, was with her 16-year-old daughter and niece who ran when they saw the dog and Abida said blood was pouring out of her socks and shoes.

She said: “I saw the dog come out but I didn’t run away because I thought it meant no harm. But then it started to attack me and was biting my hands and leg and when I tried to get away it knocked me to the ground. The dog then bit me on the neck and nose and it became very scary. The dog’s owners were shouting at it to stop but didn’t really do much to help.”

The attack, which happened on Saturday at 9am, saw Abida taken to hospital and she is now recovering well after being given antibiotics.

Lancashire Police investigated the attack and a spokesman said: “After visiting the couple who owned the dog, it was willingly given over and put down.”

And Tahir Mahmood,
Abida’s husband, called for dog owners to keep their pets on leads.

He said: “This could have been much worse, especially if the person the dog had attacked had been a child. Luckily my wife is ok but people shouldn’t be letting dogs off leads if they can’t control what it does. My daughter is scared of dogs and we’ve seen in the news this isn’t the first attack by a dog recently. Hopefully after this more will be done to prevent further attacks.”
