Preston’s restored war memorial is to be rededicated on Friday, 88 years to the day after it was first unveiled.

The city will hold a special service to officially re-open the monument to fallen troops starting at 12.45pm.

New Mayor Coun Nick Pomfret, who will carry out the rededication and lay a wreath on behalf of the city council, said: “The service is a poignant reminder of the sacrifice made by Prestonians, not only throughout the First World War, but during the many conflicts around the world since 1918.

“A rallying cry goes out to serving personnel, veterans and their families to attend and pay their respects to those whose lives have been lost in conflict, at this unique event.”

On Friday the colour party and guards from the 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment will open proceedings by marching on to the Flag Market led by the band of the King’s Division.
