Uniform wars as stores cut prices

Two supermarket giants are gearing up for a school uniform price war after launching cut-price ranges.

Parents can pick up a uniform for 4.75 from Asda – while Tesco has vowed to kit kids out for 3.75.

And the announcement will be music to the ears of many recession-hit Lancashire families.

Asda's bulk deal includes 3 for two packs of two polo shirts, 3 for two packs of sweatshirts and 5 for two packs of trousers or skirts – the equivalent of 4.75 for kitting out one child.

From Thursday, Tesco is offering uniforms for 3.75.

Jayne Walmesley, of Plungington, has a son Luke, 10, who goes to Eldon Primary School.

The mother-of-two said: "I get his trousers from Asda and the T-shirt is from Asda but the jumper you can only get from specialised shops.

"He grows very quickly so it's good."

Kirsty Salisbury, from Ribbleton, mother to Denver, who goes to Corpus Christi Catholic Sports College and Pierce, a pupil at Grimsargh St Michael's Primary, said: "We've lived abroad, in Cyprus and Germany because my husband's in the Army and Next you can get through the catalogue so that's why I've always stuck to Next.

"I think you pay a bit extra and they do last longer and look a bit nicer."

Susan Coombes, of Cleveleys Avenue, Fulwood – mother to St Mary and Andrew's Catholic Primary pupil Patrick, 11, and Amanda, 14 – said: "Boys are a bit rougher so I get Patrick's from Marks and Spencer because they last longer but it is good value."

Both ranges are for children aged three to 16 and the Asda range went on sale on Thursday for 10 days.

A spokesman for Asda said: "Sales have been going really well, they have been flying off the shelves."

Tesco has clothes stores in Leyland and Walton-le-Dale.
