A head-on collision at a notorious accident blackspot left two men dead and a third in hospital with serious injuries.
Kevin Evans, 34, a father-of-two, formerly from Euxton, was the front seat passenger in a Volkswagon Golf when the accident happened at about 11.30pm on Wednesday night.
He died in Royal Blackburn Hospital shortly after the accident on a bend in the A764 Preston Old Road at Feniscowles.
The driver of the car, a 35-year-old man from Bamber Bridge, died at the scene.
First-aider Christine Cooke, 70, whose home is close to the bend where the accident happened, said she heard the impact of the crash shortly after going to bed.
She said: “It looked extremely serious. The cars were in a really bad state with the bonnets of both of them pushed right back.
“Another car had already stopped to help and the driver of the Ford Focus was sitting in the back. I went and sat with him until the police and ambulance arrived.
“He was very shocked and clearly had leg injuries.”
Mrs Cooke, a motorsport steward, said the stretch of road where the accident happened was well known as a blackspot.
She said: “Ten cars crashed into the wall by my house in the first 12 years after I moved here.
“It’s because of local people campaigning that there is now a barrier there.
“We’ve asked for a speed camera, but nothing has happened. The limit is 30 but you see people who must be doing 40 or 50.”
Mrs Cooke said that the Golf, which had been travelling towards Blackburn, appeared to have spun round and hit the wall on the opposite side of the road, coming to rest facing the other way.
The driver of the Ford Focus, a 59-year-old man from Poulton-le-Fylde, is in a serious condition at the Royal Blackburn Hospital.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident.
Sgt Jon Allwright from Lancashire’sRoad Policing Unit said: “This is a tragic accident that affects three families and we have specially trained officers supporting them.
“I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or perhaps saw the vehicles in the run up to the collision to come forward.” Anyone with information can call the Road Policing Unit at Samlesbury on 101.
