Buses replaced trains between Preston and Carlisle due to flooding.
Services were affected because of flooding between Oxenholme Lake District railways station and Penrith North Lakes railway station this afternoon.
Free coach replacements were put on from Preston railway station for rail passengers.
A spokesman for Virgin Trains said: “We first became aware of the issue at 4.49pm.
“It was fairly short-lived and the line was reopened at 5.47pm.
“We ordered a number of coaches at Preston and Carlisle and these will be retained just in case.”
