Public toilets at the Bull Beck picnic site in Caton could be closed for good following another spate of vandalism in the building.
Furious council bosses say the attack is believed to have taken place at around 2am on Sunday when the locked metal security gates were ripped off their hinges by the intruders.
During the attack, toilets were smashed, water pipes ripped off the wall and paper dispensers and door locks broken. The litter bin outside the block was set on fire causing further damage.
Clearing and replacing the broken toilets is likely to cost £2,000.
Mark Davies, head of environmental services, said: “This particular toilet block has been subjected to mindless acts of vandalism for many years now as well as being a hotspot for antisocial behaviour.
“Regardless of the fact that the toilets are located on a popular picnic area used by many during the day, the council simply cannot continue spending council tax payers money on making repairs to the toilet block, only for it to be damaged again during the night.”
The block will be closed until further notice.
