Nearly 46,000 people flocked to Preston’s street market at the weekend.
Traders on the Lancashire Market reported selling out as 45,700 hit the stalls down Friargate and Orchard Street on Saturday.
Organisers from the Preston Business Improvement District said linking the market to the city’s traditional covered markets had proved a big hit.
BID spokesman Mark Whittle said: “The traders at the top of Orchard Street were reporting being rushed off their feet.
“It was a no brainer for both markets to be able to support each other and it something we will definitely look to do again next time.
“We had hoped for around 40,000 people, so to get nearly 46,000 is amazing.”
David Maden, who was running his Posh Pork Pie Company on Friargate Brow, sold out of his pies, tarts and quiches and hailed the market as one of the best he had been to.
He said: “We go to a lot of horse shows, food festivals and similar events and this is one of the best I have ever attended.
“The people have been great, a lot of people have wanted to know about the product and the whole event was well attended.”
Jill Warren, who runs her own cupcake-making business her from Penwortham home, said she had sold out of her home-made cakes.
She said: “We have been coming ever since this started and every time I make more and more cakes and every time we sell out.
“The place has a real buzz to it, it really brings Friargate to life.”
Andrea Mellon, who runs tapas restaurants Duk and Pond in the city centre, was handing out samples of her dishes and taking bookings.
She said: “It is about showcasing what we are doing, so we have brought a variety of different things to try.
“We have been really busy from the start, it is the first time we have done this but we will definitely be back.”
Shopper Henry Allison, who visited the market from Blackburn, added: “This is the way markets should be, selling their produce on the street, it gives a real buzz.”
The next market is in August.
