14-year-old cancer sufferer nears end of treatment after tough year

After a torrid year, things are finally on the up for one Chorley youngster.

Warrior Luke Watkinson is on his way to winning his biggest battle yet as he goes into the final stages of treatment for cancer.

The 14-year-old was diagnosed with cancer of the liver in August and underwent a 10-hour operation to remove a six kilogram tumour from his stomach.

But the youngster is fighting back after enjoying Christmas with his family, including mum Adele.

She said: “Christmas is such a positive thing and I’m glad we can all enjoy it.

“Everything is finally looking good and his final sessions are in January.

“This is just a huge relief for us. I couldn’t believe it when he was first diagnosed.

“When I saw the size of the tumour it really shook me.

“But Luke has battled on and things are looking good for him. He still uses all of his manners and never moans or groans.”

The young lad, a keen student of judo, has received nothing but support from friends, family and members of the public.

Friends at his judo club in Whittle-le-Woods raised cash by doing a sponsored sit-up competition.

Meanwhile his school Holy Cross High School, to which Luke recently returned, organised a sponsored charity match against Southlands.

Luke managed to make a special appearance at the match, where Adele was overwhelmed by the support her son has received.

She said: “I was in tears at the match and it was just such a nice thing to do.

“Luke attends Holy Cross and he has friends at Southlands. The kids organised the match between themselves and raised £750 which was excellent. Luke managed to attend the game but he didn’t watch it all. He stayed in the car to keep warm, I watched and was in tears.

“It was just so nice that people went out their way to do this for him.”
