The stories behind education league tables (with slideshow)

The latest league tables published by the Government this week are based on the results of last May's Sats tests for 11-year-olds in state primary schools.

Despite complaints that the data is outdated and give too narrow a picture of pupils' abilities, Lancashire schools continue to do well, beating all national benchmarks.

The county is among the best in the country for both academic excellence in the classroom and value added, with many schools picking up top marks across the board.

Many of the county's schools feature in the nation's top 5%.

Lancashire's scores have shown an improvement in mathematics, and science results were maintained at a high of 89%.

There was a slight drop in the result for English from 82% to 81%, which is also reflected in national results.

Critics say that by the time the tables are published they are out of date. The pupils included in the latest tables left primary school last July.

Several of the county's small schools do not feature in the tables because they had fewer than 10 pupils in year six.

County Councillor Susie Charles is Lancashire County Council's new cabinet member for children and schools. Susie took over the role in mid-November and is looking forward to visiting as many schools as possible.

She says: "Although I have only been in office a short time, I have long since been impressed by the range and quality of the work undertaken by Lancashire's schools.

"I'm also fascinated by the diversity in our primary schools, from tiny rural schools serving scattered communities to city schools with high numbers of pupils, and those catering for pupils with special needs."

She added: "Lancashire's results are either 1 or 2% higher in all subjects when compared to national data. However we are never complacent and I know that our schools will be looking to improve even further next year."
