A teenager is fighting for his life in hospital after being assaulted with a baseball bat in a gang attack.

Police have appealed for witnesses after the 19-year-old man sustained serious head injuries during the incident in Clayton-Le-Woods, near Preston, on Thursday.

Officers were contacted by the ambulance service at around 10.50pm, after paramedics tended to three men who had been assaulted in Higher Meadow.

They said the men were leaving the address when they were approached by a gang of three men, all carrying baseball bats or similar weapons, who demanded money.

The victims retreated back inside the address but were followed by the offenders, who ransacked the house and again demanded money.

One of the victims handed over a quantity of cash but all three men were then assaulted.

A 22-year-old man and a 21-year-old man were punched in the face and received minor injuries.

However, the third man was hit over the head with a baseball bat.

He was taken to Royal Preston Hospital for treatment, where his condition is described as critical.

Det Chief Insp Andrea Barrow said: “This is a serious incident in which one man sustained serious injuries. We believe it was a targeted attack but the motive for the incident is unclear at this time.

“I would reassure people that an investigation is underway, but the incident has taken place in a densely populated residential area, so I would urge anybody that witnessed it or who has any information that could assist with our investigation to contact Lancashire Police on 101.”

Anybody with any information about the incident can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111, or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not have to go to court.
