Residents have won a battle to keep Sunday special by opposing extended opening hours for a convenience store near their homes.
Supermarket chain Morrisons were refused permission to trade for an additional nine hours on the sabbath and on Bank Holidays at their “local” shop in Blackpool Road, Ashton, Preston after complaints it would disrupt the neighbourhood on rest days.
Members of the city’s planning committee heard the company wanted to bring Sundays and Bank Holidays into line with the rest of the week - opening from 7am until 10pm instead of the current 10am to 4pm. They also asked for deliveries to be allowed between 10am and 8pm at the store on the site of the former Jaguar House. But an objection from residents in adjacent Abingdon Drive was upheld after the meeting was told expected noise from delivery wagons and shoppers’ cars could prove intrusive.
One neighbour told the committee: “This is the only day that we have for peace and quiet.”
