Snowfall: Snow laid in Chorley last night

Lancashire motorists are being warned to be prepared as heavy snow is forecast
today and over the weekend.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for the majority of Britain as a band of snow spreads north easterly with accumulations of up to 15cm expected to fall over three to six hours.

Last night snow began to fall in parts of the county, including Chorley and Bamber Bridge.

Those needing to travel today have been advised to prepare for disruption and only venture out if necessary.

Sgt Pat Worden from the Lancashire Police Road Policing Unit said: “It is vitally important that motorists are prepared for the severe weather that has been forecast. It will cause disruption during both the morning rush hour and the evening rush hour.”

The North West Ambulance
service has also advised Lancashire
residents to take care during the
inclement weather.

Derek Cartwright, acting director of operations said: “There is always an increase in the number of road
traffic collisions and falls and therefore I ask that the public only take
necessary journeys.”

Today, motorists making essential journeys have been advised to keep
essential supplies on-board such as a fully charged mobile phone, de-icer, a torch, a map, and even a small spade in case of snowdrifts.

Those on longer journeys should take food and a flask containing hot drinks.
